SNOWBERRY LAND
Space installation “Lumemarjamaa” ("Snowberry Land") and photo exhibition “Lumi võtab tuld” ("Snow Catches Fire")
Telliskivi Creative City, Tallinn
December 2020 - January 2021
At the end of 2020 a friends´ group consisting of the textile artist and photographer Ülle Saatmäe, fashion designer Kalle HT Aasamäe and the creator of the linen home textile brand "Öökülm" (Viive Küttner) were given the opportunity to exhibit and to sell their creations in a pop-up store located in Telliskivi Creative City.
These three individuals operating in different fields are united by a shared understanding of high quality and modern Estonian design, as well as art in the interior. The key concepts unifying them as artists are: genuine Estonian style, utilisation of high-quality and natural materials, and well thought out creations without excessively vain details. While Aasamäe and Küttner presented textiles, namely clothing and home textiles, Ülle Saatmäe's contribution was the exhibition "Snow Catches Fire" consisting of five photos from a joint project displaying Estonian late autumn nature.
Apart from the photo exhibition, Ülle Saatmäe was tasked with creating a unified and complete concept of the pop up store exhibition setting. Inspired by the line of the poem of Peeter Ilus "...we´ll lay on a bed of a snowberry tree", Ülle Saatmäe called the exhibition "Snowberry Land", and utilised natural plant material and objects found in the nature to decorate the room.
In terms of room design it is worth calling attention to the large-scale lighting installation made of branches, cables and white light bulbs that hung in the middle of the room. On one hand, it solved the lighting issue by filling the room with a soft, appropriate light, while on the other hand, it emphasised the integrity of the entire display.
